As a writer, finding a writing routine that works for you is key to achieving your goals. Over the years, I’ve developed a routine that allows me to be productive and creative while still maintaining a balance in my personal life. In this post, I’ll share my experience of developing a successful writing routine that works for me.
Step 1: Identify the best time for writing
First, I identified the time of day when I’m most productive and creative. For me, it’s early in the morning, before the day gets busy. I also found that a change of scenery can be helpful, so I sometimes write in a coffee shop or a park. Once I found the time and place that works for me, I made sure to protect that time and schedule other activities around it.
Step 2: Set achievable goals
Setting achievable writing goals has been crucial to my routine. I aim to write a certain number of words or complete a specific scene each day. I also break down larger projects into smaller, more manageable tasks. This helps me stay motivated and makes the writing process feel less overwhelming.
Step 3: Eliminate distractions
Eliminating distractions is key to staying focused during my writing time. I turn off my phone, close all unnecessary tabs on my computer, and eliminate any other distractions in my environment. This helps me stay in the zone and write more efficiently.
Step 4: Take breaks
Taking breaks is essential to avoiding burnout and staying fresh. I take a short break after each writing session to rest my mind and recharge. During this time, I do something I enjoy, like reading or taking a walk. This helps me come back to my writing refreshed and ready to go.
Step 5: Be flexible
Finally, it’s important to be flexible with your routine. Life happens, and sometimes things don’t go according to plan. I try to be kind to myself and understand that some days may be more productive than others. If I miss a writing session, I don’t beat myself up about it. Instead, I focus on getting back on track the next day.
In conclusion, developing a successful writing routine takes time and experimentation. It’s important to find what works for you and stick to it, but also to be flexible and adjust as needed. With the right routine in place, you’ll be well on your way to achieving your writing goals.

Great advice Sebastian, I agree. The “taking breaks” part is the hardest for me….;-)
Thank you, envisioneden! I completely understand the struggle with taking breaks. As writers, we can get so caught up in our work that it’s difficult to step away. But I’ve found that taking breaks actually helps me be more productive in the long run. Keep working at it, and I’m sure you’ll find a balance that works for you!
😉 Thank you
I agree with all you’ve written here. I think having a routine with no distractions is essential. One of the most important things you mentioned is not to beat ourselves up if we can’t stay strictly within our set guidelines all the time. It’s practically impossible not to let the real world intrude from time to time.
This is a good post with sensible suggestions, most of which I adhere to myself.
Thank you, Russell! I’m glad to hear that you found my post helpful and that you also practice many of these suggestions in your own writing routine. And you’re absolutely right – it’s important to be kind to ourselves when life gets in the way. We can’t always control our circumstances, but we can control how we react to them. Happy writing!
Thanks for sharing this.

Great routine. It is so important to develop good habits and set up an environment free from distractions so that we can do good work.
Thank you, Alex! I couldn’t agree more━developing good habits and creating a distraction-free environment are crucial to success as a writer. It’s not always easy, but with dedication and perseverance, we can all achieve our writing goals. Best of luck to you on your own writing journey!
Hi Sebastian
Thank you for “liking” my post. I too believe that establishing a writing routine is essential if I want to get any work done. At the moment I am struggling to adjust my timing to include both working on my next novel, attending markets to sell “Ocean” and my affiliate marketing business. I actually enjoy this struggling stage, because I know something good will develop and I will learn from it.
Thanks again
Bev
